Historic Districts and Sites

The St. Charles Historic District consists of sixteen blocks of buildings and residences that date from the 19th century located on the scenic banks of the Missouri river. The architecture of the district reflects the German and French heritage of the settlers of this region. The district offers shops, boutiques, galleries, and cafes to explore.

The Lewis and Clark Center features both a museum with artifacts and memorabilia pertaining to the Lewis and Clark expedition in the 19th century as well as a nature preserve. The trails through the nature preserve go through various microenvironments including wetland marshes and woodlands where a plethora of wildlife can be observed. The lower floor of the museum functions as a boat house, which houses full size replicas of boats used in the Lewis and Clark expeditions and are now used in historical re-enactments. The Lewis and Clark Center host various events including a Fall Storytelling Festival. The Lewis and Clark Center is located at 701 Riverside Drive in St. Charles.

St Charles Nature Trails and Parks
St. Charles County Heritage Museum contains artifacts recounting the history of the St. Charles area. The museum grounds also serve as the starting point for a two-mile Centennial Trail that links the museum with Katy Trail State Park. The museum is located at 1630 Heritage Landing in St. Charles.

Katy Trail State Park features a 225-mile hiking and bicycle trail that follows historic railroad tracks across the state of Missouri. Sections of the trail are suitable for horseback riding and many long distance runners use the trails for training. There are various parks along the trail for camping and to gat supplies and refreshments.
